Commemoration of 74th Founder’s Day
On February 17, 2025, UL celebrated its 74th Founder’s Day at the Capitol Hill Campus in Monrovia. The event marked the university’s establishment on February 15, 1951, transitioning from Liberia College, which was founded in 1862. The celebration included reflections on UL’s history and its contributions to higher education in Liberia.

Passing of Professor Florence S. Blyden
The UL community mourns the loss of Professor Florence Serena Blyden, who passed away on January 29, 2025, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Hospital in Monrovia. Professor Blyden, born in 1942, was a respected member of the faculty, and her contributions to the university have been widely acknowledged.
Appointment of Dr. Layli Maparyan as UL President
In January 2025, Dr. Layli Maparyan was appointed as the 16th president of the University of Liberia. In her inaugural address, Dr. Maparyan committed to addressing key challenges, including regularizing faculty pay, stabilizing the academic calendar, and improving campus sanitation. She emphasized the importance of financial stability and a conducive learning environment for both students and staff.
Resumption of Academic Activities
Academic activities at UL resumed on January 13, 2025, across all campuses. The Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs encouraged students to attend classes promptly and urged faculty and staff to continue their duties to ensure a successful semester.
Launch of Doctoral Programs
In October 2024, UL launched its first doctoral programs in Health Sciences and Educational Administration. This milestone, achieved after 162 years, was officiated by President Joseph Boakai, who pledged government support for academic research and emphasized the programs’ significance in advancing higher education in Liberia.
